As the weather is getting warmer, it is the perfect time for ice makers getting back to your kitchen. However, like all other electrical machines, sometimes your ice maker may make ice very slow or even not work properly. First, you need to understand how does an ice maker work. Long before automatic ice machine was invented, people used to pour water into a mold and place it in the fridge. The modern machine has simply automated this process. At the beginning of the ice making cycle, an electrical signal is sent to the water valve to fill the mold. Then the freezer goes to work. The process will be halted soon as the cubes reach 5 - 9 degrees Fahrenheit.
The ice cubes will then be pushed out of the molds into the collection tray through the ejector blades. A shaft separates the tray from the dispenser at the front of the unit. Here are several common reasons why sometimes your ice maker isn’t working as expected.
If the unit won’t turn on, make sure if it is plugged into an outlet of the proper voltage and the circuit breaker is functioning. If the problem persists, the unit will need to be repaired by a qualified electrician.
If the water line to your ice maker is clogged, it is impossible to make quality ice. The scenario is likely to be there is no water reaching the freeze tray when the pump is operating or water leaking from the unit.
Misshapen ice, fractured ice and frosted ice could all possibly be stuck in the ice mold. When an entire batch of ice gets stuck, no new ice can be formed. The easy fix is to turn off your ice maker (flip the filler bar up) and use a pitcher to gently cover the ice maker tray with warm water. The stuck ice bits would be melt away without adding any chemicals to your ice tray – making it safe to start making ice again right away.

If ice produced is too small or soft, it may be the over-warmed ambient air temperature, lower water supply or the water placed in the reservoir is too warm. Try use chilled water. A faulty ice maker thermostat can also interfere with the normal formation of ice cubes.
